White-tailed Ptarmigan - Guanella Pass, Colorado - April, 1999

For many years we took Spring break ski trips to Colorado, and I couldn't resist getting in a little birding. Guanella Pass, well known for having Ptarmigan, was only a short drive from where we stayed in Georgetown. More than once we were rewarded with great looks at this bird in it's pristine winter plumage. Sadly, the pass is no longer plowed during the winter, limiting access to these birds.

The following photo was taken with an Olympus OM2 SLR camera and a 500mm mirror lens.
