Hoatzin - Sani Lodge, Ecuador - November, 2024
Despite being very common, this fascinating bird was a big highlight of our trip! This large species is so primitive they digest their leafy diets with fermentation like cows, and the chicks actually have hooks on their wings. When approached, they seldom fly, instead hissing and grunting in protest! The last image shows an adult feeding a chick with regurgitated plant matter - yum!
These photos were taken with a Canon R5 Digital Camera with a 100-400mm zoom lens.
