These shots were taken in Indiana waters of Lake Michigan between 2009 and 2018. These interesting Herring Gulls can appear "Thayer's-like" at first glance with less black and more white in the primaries than typical American Herring Gulls.
Often a yellow iris, heavy bill, and lack of winter head streaking are among clues that these are indeed Herring Gulls. It would be interesting to know what these birds looked like in immature plumages.
