This Thayer's-like adult Herring Gull has less black in the primaries than typical American Herring Gulls.
Photos 2 and 3 show how this bird could be mistaken for a Thayer's Gull in the field. Photo 1 shows the primary pattern more intermediate between typical Thayer's and Herring. The yellow iris and heavy bill were obvious in the photos, confiming that this interesting bird was indeed a Herring Gull.
These photos were taken with a Nikon D50 Digital Camera with a 70-300mm zoom lens.
