Common Pauraque - Estero Llano Grande State Park, Weslaco, Texas - April

We first visited Estero Llano Grande State Park in 2013, and had heard about Pauraques being found on day roosts. Having never photographed this species, we set out to find one. Their camoflage was incredible, blending in perfectly with the leaf litter, so it took several minutes to find one (see the last image to get a sense of the challenge - can you see the bird?). Once we had the hang of it, we found three. In 2018, we again had the opportunity to photograph this beautiful species at Estero Llano Grande.

These photos were taken with a Canon digital camera with a 100-400mm zoom lens.
